Pros and Cons of having the NFL Draft online

The NFL Draft is coming up on April 23rd, but there is something different about this year’s draft compared to the past drafts. This year’s draft will be virtually online, due to the breakout of the coronavirus. With this being the right move by moving the draft to online to avoid the spread of the virus, but was it thee right move.

Pros

There is many pros with moving this draft online, especially the main reason to avoid the break out of COVID-19. With not having so many people around, it could avoid a breakout of this virus from getting worse and worse. It helps the safety of the fans, ownership, and athletes to not receive the virus on a special day. Another pro is you don’t have to worry about moving the draft later in the summer, so the owners and athletes could have more time to prepare for the team, moving, and settling into their new homes. It helps them prepare for 3-4 months, instead of preparing for 1-2 months before the start of the season. The last thing is it is a good thing that there will still be a draft, as this has been a day many college athletes have been waiting for. It is a good thing that the draft still continues, and the college students don’t have to wait another year if the NFL season gets cancelled.

Cons

There can be a lot of cons to having the draft. One of the cons is, this could affect the time teams have to draft the player they want. Another worry is with having the draft online, NFL teams could be worried that the draft could be hacked. A. hacker could come in, and hack the system possibly switching up their pick, or not getting their pick on time. Not only that this online draft could be difficult for teams, it could affect teams wanting to make trades. There is always an adrenaline with being at the actual draft in making trades, and with it being online, it could affect making any moves as it gives teams possibly more time to think. The last con is the players won’t experience the true draft experience. They won’t go the city of where the draft is to get their name called, they won’t go up and shake the commissioners hand, and they won’t be able to experience it in person. Even though the draft is still happening, and the athletes will still get drafted, they won’t experience the real experience.

I am in favor of having the draft online, to help prevent a breakout, but it will be different not watching the actual draft with players being in the city to wait their name being called. I don’t think that the NFL season will be cancelled, as I think this virus situation will be over by then. But I do think that the NFL made the right decision, and if this virus continues on intro the NFL season, I would understand why they would have to either suspend or call off the season.
