Timberwolves will select first in 2020 NBA Draft, Warriors and Hornets secure a pick in the top three

The Minnesota Timberwolves are already off to a good start this offseason. The 2020 NBA Draft Lottery was announced Thursday night, and the Minnesota Timberwolves will be the first pick in the NBA Draft this October. The Golden State Warriors will be the second pick in the draft, while the Charlotte Hornets will select third. This will be Minnesota’s first pick since 2015 when they took their franchise star Karl Anthony-Towns.

2020 NBA Draft Lottery Results

1. Minnesota
2. Golden State
3. Charlotte
4. Chicago
5. Cleveland
6. Atlanta
7. Detroit
8. New York
9. Washington
10. Phoenix
11. San Antonio
12. Sacramento
13. New Orleans
14. Boston from Memphis

The New York Knicks can never get anything right lol. There was hopes of maybe the Knicks could jump all the way to the top 3 to get a guy like Anthony Edwards or Lamelo Ball, but now they will have to settle for whoever will be the best available when the 8th pick comes. The Boston Celtics will have the Memphis Grizzlies pick this year, which will make the Grizzlies have to trade for a first round pick or sign some free agents this off season to improve. The Chicago Bulls secure the 4th pick in the draft, which will be key for them as they look to improve their roster with a new coach to come. The Detroit Pistons got news they did not want to hear as they were hoping to get a top 3 pick. The Pistons could possibly trade this pick or look to make a wise pick to bring this back to playoff contention.

Who will the top 3 picks take in the draft?

My Predictions

  1. Minnesota Timberwolves -Anthony Edwards

The Minnesota Timberwolves acquired point guard D’Angelo Russell, a 2019 NBA All-Star, from the Golden State Warriors at the trade deadline this past season. With the Timberwolves now have Karl Anthony-Towns and D’Angelo Russell as their one-two punch, the Timberwolves will be looking to bring in a shooting guard. I believe the guy they will take with the first pick is Anthony Edwards from Georgia. He is an excellent 3-level scorer who has a high ceiling in the NBA. I don’t think that the Timberwolves will immediately be a playoff team after they select Edwards, but if they keep the same group together, they could be a good playoff team in the West in the future. I don’t see them taking James Wiseman, because they don’t really need a center right now. They could go after one in free agency. They may surprise some people and take Lamelo Ball, but I don’t think Lamelo wants to go to Minnesota because he won’t get to play the way he wants to play.

2. Golden State Warriors – James Wiseman (IF THEY KEEP THE PICK)

Injuries put the Golden State Warriors in the lottery this year, but this next season they will be right back contending for an NBA title. The dynamic back court in Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson will be back and healthy, as they will be ready to compete for their fourth NBA title. Defensive anchor Draymond Green will be back, as new acquisition from the Timberwolves will be looking to shine in his new role on the team. The Warriors need a center and the perfect guy to take is James Wiseman from Memphis. He’s a great rim protector, solid post scorer, and is capable hitting the outside shot. The Warriors don’t really need a guard unless they want a good backup in Anthony Edwards or Lamelo Ball if they happen to fall to them. But the Warriors could trade this pick for another key player. I mean we all saw them quickly trade away D’Angelo Russell as trade bait, and I could see them trade the second pick for a star player. I will not be surprised if they trade this pick, and if they do I will be curious to see who they take.

3. Charlotte Hornets – Obi Toppin

The Charlotte Hornets were not expected to make this high of a pick, but here they are. I don’t see them taking a guard because they seem pretty set on Devonte Graham and Terry Rozier. So I see them taking Obi Toppin from Dayton. The Hornets could use a strong small forward and that guy is Obi Toppin. He went to a smaller Division One school, but he plays very aggressive and has he ability to have a long NBA career. I know the Hornets are trying to build this team future as they no longer have Kemba Walker anymore, so I feel like Obi Toppin will be a great start to building the team’s future. Lamelo Ball could be taken with this pick, but I don’t know if the Hornets will take him because he will most likely have to come off the bench or trade Graham or Rozier to make Ball fit in.

The NBA Draft will be in October, but there is still lots of basketball still to be played as many teams will be looking to win an NBA title.

Go Celtics!
