Patriots sign QB Cam Newton to a one year deal

The 2015 NFL MVP has found a new home for the next season. Free Agent quarterback Cam Newton and the New England Patriots have agreed to a one year, $7.5 million dollar contact. Newton played for the Carolina Panthers for nine seasons after being released by the team this past spring.

Newton will compete for the starting quarterback position between 2019 Patriots draft pick Jarrett Stidham and NFL veteran QB Brian Hoyer.

My Thoughts

YES! I have been wanting this happen for awhile and after the way things were looking, I didn’t think it was going to work out. Cam Newton is a New England Patriot!

Newton was the 2015 NFL MVP and led the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl in that year. He has not been the same since that amazing season, but he can still be a good quarterback to have on your team. He has been known for being a dramatic player in the locker room, and dealing with injuries. But if he stays healthy and is under the right organization like he is with the Patriots, he can be a very solid quarterback.

I’m not saying that he is going to be that NFL MVP quarterback in New England, but he makes the Patriots a potential threat in the AFC again.

BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN HE HAS THE STARTING QUARTERBACK POSITION!

He still has to work to get the starting job. Because the Patriots seemed pretty set on having Jarrett Stidham as the future star quarterback for the New England Patriots. They could still have Stidham start as quarterback and have Newton on as the backup quarterback.

THIS ALSO DOESN’T MEAN HE WILL STAY ON THE TEAM EITHER!

Knowing Bill Belichick he will not be afraid to cut someone with a big name. We have seen Tim Tebow, Chad Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Antonio Brown, Josh Gordon, and many other big names. He may try out Newton in pre-season and then get rid of him when the season starts. You never know.

All in All, I LOVE this pickup. This makes the Patriots a threat in the AFC again, and I really hope this works out.

Lakers guard Avery Bradley opts outs of NBA re-start

The Los Angeles Lakers will be playing without their best defensive guard in the NBA restart. Lakers’ Avery Bradley has decided to not to play in the NBA restart to remain with his family. Bradley’s son has a struggling respiratory system that makes it difficult for him to recover if his son was to get the corona virus.

Bradley was averaging around 8.6 PPG and about a steal a game. Bradley was always guarding the best guard on every team, each night. The Los Angeles Lakers are standing at the top of the Western Conference standings, revamping the city of Los Angeles again. But with the Lakers losing a starter in Avery Bradley, the quest for an NBA championship just became a little tougher.

My Thoughts

Losing Avery Bradley will definitely hurt the Lakers chances of winning an NBA Championship. Bradley might not be the same guy like he was in Boston, but he is still a key member to any NBA team.

But I fully understand why he is sitting out the NBA restart. Your family is important and if you don’t want to take the risk and possibly catch the corona virus that could affect your family, then I respect his decision without a doubt.

You can now expect the Lakers to sign a guard, and there has been rumors around that they are looking to sign J.R. Smith. Smith has not played since 2018 when he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he could bring an impact to the Lakers.

Smith has made some dumb decisions when he has played the game. But Smith is a great outside shoot and can be able to knock down an open shot. He doesn’t have the defensive impact like Avery Bradley, but Smith is a very talented player and has lots of playoff experience.

Paul George reveals why he left the Indiana Pacers

Paul George revealed some interesting news on why he requested a trade from the Indiana Pacers in 2017. On an podcast appearance called “Knuckleheads” with Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles, George revealed he wanted out of Indiana when the Pacers organization told him that they would not move pieces to acquire “The Best PF in the Game” to team up with George in Indiana. The Pacers told George, they could not to do the deal because the team was a small market.

The player was rumored to possibly be Anthony Davis or Blake Griffin, but that still remains unnamed. After growing frustration with the team, George told the Pacers he would not be re-signing in 2018.

The Pacers ended up trading Paul George to the Oklahoma City Thunder that offseason in exchange for Domantas Sabonis and Victor Oladipo.

My Thoughts

I don’t know if this is exactly 100% true, but it is very interesting to hear.

The Pacers were coming off a first round sweep by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017, and I knew that after that sweep, things would look a lot different in Indiana..

My guess is that the guy who Paul George was talking about was Blake Griffin. He was a free agent at the time, and it just sounded like they weren’t willing to sign Griffin because of how much he was worth that off-season. Anthony Davis was on the Pelicans and did not have any issues with playing in New Orleans at the time in 2017. I think Blake Griffin was looking to get off the Los Angeles Clippers after all the drama going on. But once Chris Paul was gone, and the Clippers offered him the big contract, he decided to stay in the bright lights of LA.

Regardless of how things turned out, I think Paul George was going to leave Indiana at some point. He wanted to be in LA and play for the Los Angeles Lakers. It is near where he grew up, and I think he at some point wanted to play in the big lights in Los Angeles.

MLB and MLBPA agree to 60-game season

Baseball is back and will return next month. Major League Baseball and MLB Player’s Association have agreed to a 60-game season to start the 2020 MLB season. Players will report to training camp on July 1st, and the season will start on either July 23rd or 24th.

With a 60-game season, it will mean that players will earn around 37% of their full season salary as long as the season is complete. Also, the MLB trade deadline will be in August, about a month after the MLB start-up.

My Thoughts

Finally, they reached a deal.

I honestly thought this thing would never end. I think the players finally came to their conclusion that they wanted to play, and now there will be a baseball season.

Now the season is only 60 games this year, which means a majority of these games are absolutely crucial. A losing streak will hurt a team, and a winning team can give a team a big advantage in the MLB standings.

A normal MLB season is 162 games, and the MLB has now erased 102 games. That is a big chunk of the season. It may not be much, but it is something. I think it will be more entertaining to watch, because every single game can be a very important game.

I will be glad to see some baseball on my TV this summer. And I am also hoping that after these 60 games, I can see Mookie Betts back in a Boston Red Sox uniform in the next season. 😉

Quarterback Dak Prescott signs franchise tag with Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott have finally come to a deal. The Cowboys placed the franchise tag on Dak Prescott for $31.4 million for the 2020 NFL Football season.

Last season, Prescott lead the Cowboys to an 8-8 season, throwing for thirty touchdowns and eleven interceptions. There is reports that Prescott wants to sign a four year deal with the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason.

My Thoughts

Well for now the beef with Dak Prescott and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will seem to die down a little bit. Prescott signed a HUGE contract for one year. Was he way too overpaid? Absolutely. But the deal was going to happen regardless, because the Cowboys need something to stay in playoff contention.

Prescott is definitely way too over paid though, he is one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL, but he is not on the level of Tom Brady, Drew Brees, or Aaron Rodgers. When Prescott was a rookie, he looked really promising. But ever since that 2016 season, he has not even been close to his normal self.

The Cowboys are most likely going to finish with the same record again, and possibly sneak in to the playoffs in the Wild Card game. Prescott will most likely throw the same numbers again this year, and he will be asking for this big contract again in free agency.

As overrated as Prescott is, The Cowboys needed him. They couldn’t let him walk away and have Andy Dalton run the quarterback position. If that happened, the Cowboys would be even worse.

Wizards’ Davis Bertans will sit out the NBA restart

One NBA player will not be heading to Orlando, Florida for the NBA restart. Washington Wizards forward Davis Bertans will be sitting out the remainder of the 2019-2020 NBA season. Bertans is averaging 15.4 PPG for the Wizards and will be come a unrestricted free agent this summer.

The Washington Wizards are currently 24-40 as the ninth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Wizards trail the Orlando Magic by 5.5 games for the final playoff spot in the East.

My Thoughts

I don’t really know why exactly Bertans is sitting out, but I think that with or without Bertans, the Wizards are not going to make the NBA Playoffs. The Washington Wizards would basically have to win almost all their games and hope the Nets and Magic lose a majority of their games.

Bertans is going to be a top free agent in 2020 in a very poor free agency class. He could be offered a big contract by a team this summer, and I’m sure he doesn’t want to get injured that could affect him getting a good contract offer. I mean look at Isaiah Thomas, he was projected to get a huge contract in the summer before his hip injury. Now he is out of the NBA a few years later, when he could’ve been on a max contract if he was healthy.

The Wizards were only invited to the NBA restart to give them a fair chance to get in the NBA Playoffs, regardless if they were invited or not, they were NOT going to catch the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.

FYI, Davis Bertans would be a great pickup for the Celtics, but I am not sure if we could afford him on the team this offseason. We could’ve had him in a trade at the NBA trade deadline, but Danny didn’t want to give up Brad Wanamaker or a draft pick lol Oh well.

Kyrie Irving proposes to Nets teammates to start their own league

The drama with Kyrie Irving seems to never end. Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving is back at it again by telling his teammates in a group to boycott the NBA season and start their own league. Kyrie Irving has been leading a group of NBA players, trying to convince them to sit out the rest of the NBA season to make a stand for racial injustice.

After the reports leaked of Kyrie Irving telling his teammates to start a new league, Irving left the group chat and has been denying the reports saying they are false.

My Thoughts

Here we go again.

Kyrie Irving trying to persuade NBA athletes to sit out the rest of the season for racial injustice wasn’t an awful idea, but telling his teammates to boycott the rest of the season and start their own league is just stupid.

When Kyrie was trying to persuade players to sit out the season for racial justice, I thought it was kind of a dumb idea, because I didn’t really think sitting out was going to solve anything. I felt like with them sitting out wasn’t going to do anything or make a stand. They could make their voices more heard by doing something when playing the game. Sitting out was just going to hurt the player, because they weren’t going to play the game and not get paid.

But it turns out that Kyrie was doing all of this, because he was not going to be invited to the bubble in Orlando. He tried to persuade players to not go to Orlando and play, because the NBA wasn’t letting Kyrie come to Orlando. And Kyrie was one of the guy’s that voted to have the NBA back!

Kyrie wasn’t even going to return to play anyway with his shoulder injury! It’s not like he was making the choice to sit out the season! Kyrie doing this just makes him more and more laughable, especially telling his teammates to start their own league.

What a cry baby this guy is. This is why I’m glad he is off the Celtics. The guy want everything in his hands, and when he doesn’t get what he wants, he has to go cry about it. Ever since he requested that trade from Cleveland, he has been acting so strange. I don’t know what is up with him, but he’s got to quit doing some of this stupid stuff.

I wonder what dumb thing he will do next.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell encourages teams to sign Colin Kaepernick

Free Agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since 2016, but he may be on the verge of being back on an NFL roster. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said on ESPN Monday night that teams should encourage to sign Colin Kaepernick and said he would support the team’s decision.

Kaepernick played six season in the NFL playing for the San Fransisco 49ers. He was starting quarterback for the 49ers, while leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2012. After playing six seasons with the 49ers, Kaepernick was let go by the 49ers in 2016 in hopes for a new start with a new team. After being released by San Fransisco, Kaepernick remained unsigned and was not picked up by another team since. Kaepernick believes he has not been picked up by a team, because of his political views and kneeling during the national anthem.

Should an NFL team pick up Kaepernick?

Honestly I don’t know.

Kaepernick hasn’t played an NFL game since 2016. I think that he should’ve played in the Canadian football League or another football league before wanting to make another run in the NFL. Its been a little while since her last played an organized game of football, so I wouldn’t be so sure of wanting to sign him to a NFL contract yet.

I do believe a majority of the reason why he hasn’t been signed by an NFL team was political views and causing a bunch of media attention by not standing for the nation anthem. But people forget that while he was kneeling during the national anthems, he was also not starting for the 49ers. He’s had surgeries, and didn’t really come back as the same guy he was when he led San Fransisco to the Super Bowl.

I believe with now people understanding why Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem, Kaepernick will maybe get picked up by someone. With all the Black Lives Matter movement going on, people have more understanding with Kaepernick’s decision to kneel. I think with that, it is going too make NFL owners want to maybe sign the free agent quarterback as it now might not bring much attention or drama.

But if he gets picked up, its going to be for a marketing move. It’s going in to bring a lot of money, people buying tickets, jerseys, merchandise, and more. I just don’t really see how you should give a guy an NFL contract who hasn’t played an organized game since 2016. He is not going to be the same, and I just don’t see him performing well.

I won’t be surprised if you see an NFL team pick up a new quarterback anytime soon.

Ezekiel Elliott tested postive for COVID-19

Players from the Dallas Cowboys including star running back Ezekiel Elliott has tested for the corona virus. Elliott’s agent confirmed the news that he was tested for the corona virus, but said that Elliott is feeling better already.

My Thoughts

It has honestly been a while since I have heard a big name football player test positive for COVID-19. The last football person I remember getting the corona virus was the coach for the New Orleans Saints, and that was when COVID was growing rapidly.

I don’t think that this will affect the time of the NFL spring back up. There is going to be players that will be tested for the corona virus, but if this thing rapidly grows again then it could affect the start of the season. I highly doubt that there will be another wave of the virus, but you never know now a days. I expect the NFL to make sure that players get tested for the corona virus before heading back to training camp.

Remember when Elliott and Dak Prescott had a party gathering during the stay at home mandates? It’s a little bit of karma that Elliott has it now. LOL

MLB Commissioner unsure about the 2020 baseball season

The MLB and the MLBPA drama continues. Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told ESPN on Monday that “not confident” there will be a 2020 baseball season. He believes that the MLB will return, but if there is no “dialogue” between the players and owners, then there may be no baseball this spring.

The MLB recently proposed a deal to the MLBPA to return to play with a 72 game season and a guaranteed 70% of players salaries.

My Thoughts

Man this thing is a mess!

This honestly feels like an MLB lockout now. I really don’t know what is going to happen this summer, if we are going to see any baseball being played. Players were not happy about the owners taking money away from their contract due to a shorten season, and ever since then this thing has been a circus. The players and owners and have proposed many deals, but has rejected so many offers.

Right now with how things are looking, I’m not completely sure if there will be a season. The MLB and the Player’s Association continue to dig a deeper and deeper hole with getting harder and harder to get out of this hole. These conversations have been going for weeks, and the players are not wanting to accept an offer from owners. The NBA, NHL, MLS, Nascar, and many other sports businesses have plans on returning to sports, but the MLB has still continued to be unsure about their plans. I really hope that on both sides that they get tired of arguing and agree on a deal to return to play. I think that is what both sides want, and what the world wants.

As a Red Sox fan, I would love it if we can see some baseball. But if there is not a season, it would mean Mookie Betts is a free agent. Mookie hasn’t played a single regular season game with the Dodgers, and the Red Sox could sign him back after trading him away this past off season. That would be awesome 😉
